The American writer and ex-patriot Gertrude Stein, born in February of 1874, lived in France most of her adult life, collecting Modernistart, writing novels, poetry and plays. She associated with the most famouspainters and writers of her era and a controversial figure during WWII, collaborating with the Vichey government in exchange for protection from the Gestapo. As a writer she is most famous for, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas and the phrase: “…a rose is a rose is a rose.”
