The Hand in Art
The human hand is the most common and expressive part of the body represented in art. From ancient and indigenous art forms through the Renaissance to contemporary art, the hand is used to symbolize healing or blessing, greeting, alliance or friendship, love, usefulness, authority or repression, threat or summoning, gentleness or approval. It can also indicate direction or symbolize, as our Icon Journal image implies, with the incorporation of a spiral, the path of the inner journey.
