June 2nd Celebrating Marilyn Monroe’s birthday.
Had Marilyn Monroe lived she would have turned 89 this week. Monroe’s career and marriages are well known by most film buffs and celebrity fans but the lesser known and disturbing events of her childhood, a schizophrenic mother, foster homes and sexual abuse, surely contributed to her instability in later life. The circumstances of Monroe’s death at 36 years old, are still considered to be suspicious. Unfortunately, all of these biographical facts obscure her relevance and talent as an actress and singer.
Underneath the persona was a very intelligent, self-analyzing woman, plagued by self- consciousness; a trait difficult to bare alongside the expectations of a mega star. One of her happiest periods was her marriage to the playwright Henry Miller in which Monroe enjoyed the company of intellectuals and writers such as, Carson McCullers, Isak Dinesen, Turman Capote, Carl Sandburg and Saul Bellow. Marilyn’s favorite photographs of herself are ones in which she is reading. The famous teacher and director of The Actors Studio, Lee Strasberg (and executor of Monroe’s estate) said of her, “ In her eyes, and in mine, her career was just beginning…. She had a luminous quality. A combination of wistfulness, radiance, and yearning that set her apart and made everyone wish to be part of it – to share in the childish naivete which was at once so shy and yet so vibrant.” Read more on the contents of Marilyn Monroe’s personal library here: http://blog.everlasting-star.net/marilyn-monroe/marilyns-library/
