In honor of up-coming Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating the birthday of the very courageous, Nellie Bly (1864-1922) journalist, inventor, suffragette and industrialist. Does the name ring a bell, if so you’ll remember her record-breaking air balloon trip around the world in 72 days in 1888. Bly made her name as a reporter when at the inexperienced age of 22 went undercover into the Women’s Lunatic Asylum on Blackwell’s Island in NY City, staying for ten days. She wrote, “What, excepting torture, would produce insanity quicker than this treatment.” Her subsequent articles, published in the New York World newspaper lead to a grand jury investigation into the treatment of mentally ill women, an $850,000 increase in the budget of the Department of Corrections and a thorough restructuring of criteria for admittance into insane asylums.
