The term ‘Dogwood’ is an ancient one that descends from Old English. It’s first usage was ‘dog-tree’ before 1548, becoming dogwood in by 1614. It’s root word in Old English is dagwood, referencing very hard wood used to make ‘dags’ or daggers or arrows. In Victorian England trees and flowers were celebrated in a language called “floriograhy” (or the language of flowers) used to ascribe meaning to different trees and plants in the area of love, virtues, ideals, grief and the power of nature. The attribute for dogwood is durability or fortitude.
