Celtic interlacing knot work designs are old, very old. Scholars argue about their origin, European or Middle Eastern but there is strong evidence that Zoomorphic or bird and animal styles of knot work come to us from 7th century Germanic Anglo-Saxon traditions. All Celtic knot work art was in decline by the 11th-12th centuries until a Celtic Revival in Ireland in the mid 19th century, when Victorian Arts and Crafts movement brought them back into favor. This interest waxed again until the 1970’s when American and British crafts movements re-discovered them. Our Celtic Hound covers (Portfolio pictured above) and our Celtic Peacock hair clip are classic examples of Zoomorphic knots.
