Netsuke are miniature sculptures that were invented in 17th-century Japan to serve a practical purpose. Kimono’s do not have pockets. Small containers were hung from kimono sashes and closed by a cord with a sliding bead. The bead was a small, carved Netsuke. These utilitarian objects evovled over time to become art carved pieces of extraordinary craftsmanship representing sacred aspects of Japanese folklore and life. Antique and contemporary Netsuke’s are sold as works of art.
