We’ve used it to celebrate the birthday week of two of our favorite artists: Vincent Van Gogh & William Morris. Starting tomorrow at noon CA time, we’re offering a VERY LIMITED selection of covers. These twelve covers are one of a kind, and only one cover of each is available. One cover per person please, to give as many customers as possible a chance. The Maker: William Morris “Giveme love and work- these two only.”
TheEnglishman, William Morris, (1834-1896) poet, artist, philosopher, typographer, political theorist and outstandingcontributor to the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1860’s, was a Medievalist and a Maker at heart. He rejected the idea that the ‘machine age’ could be defined as progress set out to improve society and address class inequality by promoting the idea, in word and action, that the practical and useful everyday objects in life should be beautiful and the beauty should be accessible to all. Morris was heavily associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood painters and his life-long friend was the artist “Edward Burne-Jones.
Publisher, folklorist, stained glass, metal and tapestry artist, gardener, poet and social reformer, Morris is most remembered for his wallpaper and fabric designs and for reviving many of the traditional arts which had been swept away by industrialization period of the 1860’s-1920’s. Morris refused to simply promote a handmade way of life, instead, if a craft such as embroidery or furniture making interested him, he personally mastered every stage of the hand making process before showing or selling what he made.
“With the arrogance of youth, I determined to do no less than to transform the world with Beauty. If I have succeeded in some small way, if only in one small corner of the world, amongst the men and women I love, then I shall count myself blessed, and blessed, and blessed, and the work goes on.”
