Often depicted as vain and jealous, and notorious for luring sailors to their death, Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” written in 1836, is recognized as changing the popular perception of the Mermaid as a creature who is shy, gentle, and curious about the world around them. In numerous languages, the word for mermaid is a derivative of the word “siren”. True Sirens, such as the mythological ones that appear in the Greek tale of Ulysses are not mermaids but rather supernatural beings. Mermaids on the other hand are an unusual blending of animal and human forms with moral and physical aspects of both.
