Valentine’s Day has its roots in the liturgical celebration of Saint Valentine but the origins of the holiday lie with the greatest poet of the middle ages and the father of English literature, Geoffrey Chaucer, (1343-1400) most famous for The Canterbury Tales, life and love stories of pilgrims on the road to Canterbury cathedral. Chaucer’s poetry and others helped fuel the high arts of courtly love in England and France. Lovers exchanged cards, flowers, and paper arts of heart shaped outlines, doves and cupids, all known as Valentine’s. Spring or the mating season of birds were triggers for Valentine activities. Mass produced Valentines were first produced in the 1800’s in England.
