Chaucer’s poetry and others helped fuel the high arts of courtly love in England and France. Lovers exchanged cards, flowers, and paper arts of heart shaped outlines, doves and cupids, all known as Valentine’s. Spring or the mating season of birds were triggers for Valentine activities.
